Background of the Study
Food safety standards are crucial in ensuring that food sold to the public is safe for consumption. In Nigeria, foodborne diseases are a persistent public health problem, and a lack of awareness of food safety standards is a contributing factor. In Niger State, a significant portion of food is sold in open-air markets where safety standards are often ignored. In these markets, issues such as improper food storage, lack of clean water for washing food, and inadequate sanitation facilities are common, which can lead to contamination (Amina & Jibril, 2024). This study aims to examine consumer awareness of food safety standards in markets in Niger State and how this awareness influences food safety practices among vendors.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of food safety standards and regulations, consumers in Niger State’s markets have limited knowledge about these standards, which impacts their ability to make informed choices about food safety. This lack of awareness may contribute to the consumption of unsafe food, increasing the prevalence of foodborne diseases in the state. There is a need to investigate consumer knowledge and attitudes toward food safety in order to improve food safety practices and reduce the risk of foodborne diseases.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of consumer awareness of food safety standards in markets in Niger State.
To examine the relationship between consumer awareness of food safety standards and food safety practices in these markets.
To propose strategies for improving consumer knowledge of food safety standards in Niger State’s markets.
Research Questions
What is the level of consumer awareness of food safety standards in markets in Niger State?
How does consumer awareness of food safety standards influence food safety practices in these markets?
What strategies can be implemented to improve consumer awareness of food safety standards in Niger State’s markets?
Research Hypotheses
Consumers in Niger State markets have low awareness of food safety standards.
Higher consumer awareness of food safety standards correlates with better food safety practices in the markets.
Public education campaigns on food safety will increase consumer awareness and improve food safety practices in Niger State markets.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on consumers in markets in Niger State and assess their knowledge of food safety standards. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and challenges in accessing a diverse sample of consumers across different market settings.
